This week we’ve been reading books from different countries. We’ve also been sharing our opinions about the ideas in these books, as well as agreeing and disagreeing with each other. Think about what it would be like to be Ruby growing up in China. What is your opinion about Ruby’s predicament and the customs of China? And how would you feel if those customs existed in the United States? In the United States today, do you think boys and girls are treated differently or the same? And how? Give examples.
Make sure you back up your thinking with evidence from the text and your own ideas to answer the following questions:
What is your opinion about Ruby’s predicament and the set customs of China? And how would you feel if those customs existed in the United States?

I think that the way Ruby was treated in the book was wrong because that’s not nice to treat her that way. When she was at the parade, the boys got the decorative colorful lanterns and the girls got the plain and simple ones. I infer that this made Ruby feel inferior to the boys. I infer that it made her feel like she wasn’t as liked as the boys. I admire her for writing a poem that told her grandfather how she REALLY felt. She was acting very brave and courageous to speak her mind but didn’t feel comfortable explaining her poem to her grandfather. Ruby stood up for herself (and other girls in China) by questioning the traditions of her country. She thought it wasn’t right for only boys to get an education at a university and she did not stop fighting for herself until she was accepted at a university.
I feel bad for Ruby because all of the girls had to be inside when the boys went out side to play while the girls had to stay inside and learn to cook and learn to clean houses. Also the boys got more respect and get to go to university while the girls get married and have husbands.Ruby was upset with her grandfather so she wrote him a poem about how she felt beacause the rules in China were not fair to the girls. So Ruby stood up for herself and the other girls in China to wrote that poem to her grandfather.Finnaly Ruby fought untill she got to go to university. If those rules exised in the US I would hate that beacause thats not fair.
Rubys wish was about a chinese girl who wanted to be treated like the boys and have the same amount of love. When Ruby wrote the poem about how the boys got better care then the girls. Ruby felt upset when she had to explain that to her grand father. but when she got every thing explained to her grandfather she felt alot better because she knew that the girls were going to get equel care like the boys. When Ruby wanted to go to university instead of getting married like other girls so she could get an better education than other girls and maybe boys. when she got a ticket to university she was overjoyed. I like how the author wrote a story based on her grand mother.
I agree with you. I also like how she based the story on her grandmother.
I agree to your post because I think that she felt much beter when she explaind how she felt to her grandfather. But I think that first she should have learned how to cook first so If she got married she would know how to cook and she would be able to feed her family first before she went to school. What I do not like is boys getting treated better than girls.
I think ruby is very brave for standing up for herself and wrighting the poem about how the boys are treated beter than the girls. I think that ruby was also brave for telling she wanted to go to a unavesaty insted of geting maride.
I think Ruby should write more about how she was treated because in this Time for Kids magazine, girls don’t get treated equally, like boys do the hard job for a lot of money and girls have the easy job for free. Ruby was getting treated like that until people treated her like a boy and she went to college with the boys and she is setting a goal for the other chinese girls and women to get to be treated and tell people to be treated like the boys get treated.
I think that its not fair because boys and girls need to go to academy school. So boys and girls can learn so they can both be smart. I think that boys and girls should both play out side because they can get there inergy out. And I think that when girls get older they should learn how to sew and all that later. I think that boys and girls both should get good lanterns so they are not plain . I think she was brave to talk to her grand father and to write the poem.
I think ruby should be able to go to the university because every person needs to learn. Ruby was right that it is not fair that the boys get to learn and the girls have to sit around and do the chores and clean. But there is only one thing that Ruby did that was brave, she wrote a peom to show her feelings how boys are treated fairly and girls are treated unfairly so she stood up and spoke the truth about how unfairly china is to girls like Ruby.It was very very brave and coniadent to speak to her grandfather that way. I could tell how Ruby was scared to tell her grandfather.
Well I thought it was a little bit fair about the lantern’s because at least the girls got a lattern. It’s better than nothing. But what I didin’t think was fair was that the girls didn’t get to go to the univerity. So that meant they didn’t get to go to collage after all the hard work at school. The girls could have painted the lanterns so girly that the boys wouldn’t want them. Or they could have made their own lanterns realy girly. I predict that if the girls would of just did that their problem would have ben solved.
