Five Heritage Middle School STEM club students participated in the North Carolina State University Plug-in Electric Vehicle Design Rally sponsored by The Sustainable Transportation Education Program this past Saturday, May 5th. Anna Slayton, Sharod Ruffin, Uriah King, Christian Stoner and Christian Slayton took home both the first place trophy for design and construction as well as the Middle School overall first place trophy. Their Technology Education teacher is Susanne Rhodes Killian. The HMS Team worked together afterschool to designed and fabricated a battery powered vehicle and solar charging station for the competition. In addition, they carried out research concerning solar power generation and conducted extensive vehicle testing and data collection. Evaluation was based on documentation of design process in a technical report portfolio, quality of construction, teamwork and the performance of the vehicle and charging station. In addition to receiving individual ribbons and trophies the student’s winning electric vehicle and solar charging station will be showcased for the next year in an exhibit in the new wing of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.DECA returns today from International Competition in Salt Lake City. The trip was a huge success. It was the finishing touch on the most successful school year for DECA in school history.

The next 2 groups brought home International Trophies.
Kyle May and Mark Tate won 3rd place internationally for their Creative Marketing plan with The Performance Academy.
Katie Godfrey, Megan Gravley, and Sydney Senedker won 1st place internationally for their Learn & Earn project for the Peak City Gala of Hope benefitting the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
Apex High School was the only school in North Carolina to win multiple international trophies and the only school in North Carolina to win a 1st place trophy.
Mr. Murphy and Mr. Evans would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who attended this conference for their professionalism and dedication to DECA. These students represented Apex High School and North Carolina with true class!!
